This specimen was part of lot 29122 in Heritage sale 3022 (New York, January 2013), which sold for $1,057.50. The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, "George VI Proof Set 1948, the nine coin set featuring the Farthing through the 5 Shillings. A choice set with rich toning on the silver types. Sold in the original mint case." The sixpence was struck in South Africa 1923-60. It was .800 fine silver until 1950 and .500 fine thereafter. This date is very common in all grades. It is the first date to bear the legend "GEORGIUS SEXTUS REX."
