This specimen was lot 23520 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $3,840. The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, "SOUTH AFRICA. Pond, 1892. Berlin Mint. NGC MS-63. Variety with double shaft on wagon. A highly Choice example of this first year of issue and sporting a double shaft on the front of the wagon, this specimen radiates with intense brilliance and sports a golden-yellow hue throughout." South Africa, after a turbulent history between English and Dutch settlers and the native population, was constituted the Union of South Africa in 1910. This coin was issued 1892-97 by the Afrikaner republic before its conquest by the British. With the collapse of apartheid, collecting South African coins is now respectable again. Double shaft and single shaft varieties exist for this date, referring to the design of the Boer wagon on the reverse.
