This specimen was lot 4568 in Sincona sale 95 (Zurich, October 2024), where it sold for 19,000 CHF (about US$26,334 including buyer's fees). The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, <blockquote>"''SCHWEIZ Sitten, Bistum, Nikolaus Schiner, 1497-1499. Guldiner 1498, Sitten. Der gekrönte Kaiser Karl der Grosse auf einem Thron sitzend, überreicht dem vor ihm knienden hl. Theodul das Schwert, als Zeichen der weltlichen Macht. Rv. Wappenschild von Nikolaus Schiner mit Mitra, Krummstab und Schwert. Aussen Wappenkreis mit 16 Schildern. Von grösster Seltenheit. Sehr schön. Henkelspur. Das Bistum Sitten war nach Bern der zweite Münzherr welcher diese frühen Grosssilbermünzen prägte.'' The bishops involved themselves in the petty feuds and struggles of the day, going so far as to participate in the battle of Marignano (1515). They successfully resisted the Reformation but were forced to cede their secular power in 1630. Coinage continued into the eighteenth century.
