This specimen was lot 1217 in Künker sale 263 (Osnabrück, June 2015), where it sold for €1,200 (about US$1,550 including buyer's fees). The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, <blockquote>"''SACHSEN, KURFÜRSTENTUM Friedrich August II. 1733-1763. Reichstaler 1740, Dresden, auf das Vikariat. Gestopftes Loch, fast sehr schön.'' (Electorate of Saxony, Frederick August II, 1733-63, thaler of 1740, Dresden mint, on the vicariat. Plugged, very fine.)"</blockquote> This type of 1740 and 1745 is rare. The exhaustion of the fighting in Poland rendered the Saxon state prostrate, and most of the thalers of this period are rare. Prosperity (and high mintages) would not return until the reign of Friedrich August III (1763-1806).
