This specimen was lot 2598 in Steve Album Auction 52 (Santa Rosa, CA, May 2025), where it sold for $84. The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, "[[German States, Saxony|SAXE-ERNESTINE]] LINE: Friedrich III, 1486-1525, AR schreckenberger, ND, also citing Georg & Johann, helmeted shield of arms on both sides, XF This type of silver schreckenberger was known as an "engelsgroschen" due the depiction of the angel over the electoral arms." This is not a schreckenberger (12 kreuzer) but a zinsgroschen (3 kreuzer). It was struck at Buchholz (shown here), [[Saxony (1507-25) groschen KM-MB79|Annaberg]], Schneeberg and Freiburg. The SCWC states the obverse legend should read "FRI GE IO D G DVCES SAXO" but the plate coin therein shows "FRI○IO○GE○D○G○DVCES○SAXO", just like the example here. The Albertine and Ernestine dukes of Saxony both struck this denomination which went out of favor in the mid sixteenth century. This specimen was previously lot 1341 in Steve Album Auction 31 (Santa Rosa, CA, May 2018), where it did not sell.
