This specimen was lot 4059 in Künker sale 406 (Osnabruck, March 2024), where it sold for €1,200 (about US$1,575 including buyer's fees). The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, <blockquote>"''SACHSEN, SACHSEN-ALTENBURG, HERZOGTUM, Friedrich Wilhelm II. 1639-1669. Dukat 1640, Coburg. GOLD. RR Min. gewellt, winz. Probierspur am Rand, sehr schön.'' ([[German States, Saxe-Altenburg|duchy of Saxe-Altenburg]], Frederick William II, 1639-69, ducat of 1640, Coburg mint. Very rare, slightly wavy, small tool mark on the edge, very fine.)"</blockquote> Saxe-Altenburg, one of the many splinters of ducal Saxony, was formed in 1573 and lapsed several times before its final extinction after World War One. The output of thalers was substantial but gold issues are few.
