This specimen was lot 3618 in Sincona sale 51 (Zurich, October 2018), where it sold for 1,900 CHF (about US$2,292 including buyer's fees). The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, <blockquote>"''Savoyen, Carlo Emanuele I. 1580-1630. Ducatone 1598. Äusserst selten. Fast sehr schön. Knapper Schrötling, beschnitten.'' (duchy of Savoy, Charles Emanuel, 1580-1630, ducatone of 1598. Extremely rare, About very fine, Small flan, clipped edge.)"</blockquote> This type is similar to KM 6 (= Dav-4150) struck 1601-03 and several other ducatoni struck in the 1590's including [[Savoy 1590-T ducatone Dav-8378|Dav-8378]]. The mintmark T (for Turin), normally to the left of the date, is not visible on this example as it has been clipped. Ducatone were struck in Savoy until the 1650's. This is a one year type in Davenport. None of the silver or gold coins of Savoy of the sixteenth century can be called common. In 1714, the duke's successful participation in the War of the Spanish Succession garnered him the island of Sicily, which he traded for Sardinia in 1720.
