''Sigismund von Schrattenbach, geboren 1698, entstammte dem steirischen Zweig seiner Familie. Erst am 13. Tag des Wahlganges hatte man sich auf ihn, den bisherigen Domdechanten, geeinigt, der keineswegs der tüchtigste war, wenn er auch den besten Willen mitbrachte. Durch seine besondere mönchartige Frömmigkeit erregte er das Mißfallen jener, die schon der erwachenden Aufklärung zugeneigt waren. Er betete stundenlang mit seinem Hofstaat den Rosenkranz. In Salzburg gründete er ein Zucht- und Arbeitshaus sowie zwei Waisenhäuser. Er förderte auch den Bergbau, der unter ihm eine schwache Nachblüte erlebte. Sigismund konnte aber nicht die schwere Finanzkrise beheben, in der sich sein Land befand. Der Haushalt wurde noch zusätzlich durch einen Beitrag von 18.000 Gulden an den österreichischen Kosten des Siebenjährigen Krieges und durch eine pauschale, von Preußen durchgesetzte Entschädigung von Emigrantenguthaben in Höhe von 30.000 Gulden belastet. Das Stadtbild bereicherte er durch zwei eigenartige Werke: das Sigismundtor (Neutor), einer kühnen technischen Leistung, weil es den Mönchsberg durchstieß und die Marienstatue auf dem Domplatz.
