This specimen was lot 42588 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2024), where it sold for $78,000. The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, "Stunning Gold Proof from Early in the Reign of Alexander II, RUSSIA. 5 Rubles, 1858/7-CNB NO. St. Petersburg Mint. Alexander II. NGC PROOF-65 Ultra Cameo. Featuring an overdate that is seemingly characteristic of all of the proofs of the date, this specimen is no doubt one of just a small number to offer such fantastic quality and flair. An absolute RARITY in this exalted proof format, the present example offers immensely frosted devices and highly mirrored fields, all while remarkable lustrous brilliance radiates throughout. A majestically important opportunity for the advanced collector of prized Russian treasures." This type was struck 1855-58 in considerable numbers yet is scarce in choice condition. Proofs exist as shown here. In 1886, the standard was revised to match the French twenty francs d'or, resulting in a weight reduction to 0.186 troy oz (see KM Y42).
