This specimen was lot 4011 in Stack's-Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2015), where it sold for $411.25. The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, "ITALY. Roman Republic. 3 Baiocchi, 1849B. NGC MS-64 BN. "REPUBBLICA ROMANA" on reverse. The highest graded specimen by NGC, one of only two pieces graded at this level. Natural copper toning and luster along with its sharp details make this a very attractive example." The Roman Republic was a short lived state set up in the Papal States during the European wide insurrections of 1848-49. It was crushed by foreign troops and papal rule restored until 1870. A considerable quantity of copper coins were issued along with a few billon in denominations ranging from half to forty baiocchi.
