This specimen was lot 1482 in Stephen Album sale 41 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2021), where it sold for $510. The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, "QATAR: Hamad b. Khalifa al-Thani, 1995-2013, AR 50 riyals, ND (2006), Qatar Central Bank, mintage of only 500 coins, struck at the Austrian Mint with COA and original box of issue, PCGS graded Proof 69 DCAM, R." The region, on the south coast of the Persian Gulf, was loosely ruled by the Ottoman Turks until the arrival of the British in the 1890's. The British signed treaties with the local sheikhs and the area was renamed the Trucial States, which name it held until the British withdrawal in 1971. Dubai joined the UAE while Qatar chose to become independent. The economy is entirely dependent on oil.
