The catalog description&lt;sup&gt;[1]&lt;/sup&gt; noted, &quot;PORTUGAL. Escudo, 1939. PCGS MS-64 Secure Holder.&quot; In 1910, [[Portugal]], having ousted her king, dropped the réis and adopted the escudo, divided into 100 centavos. The specimen shown is a rare date of a type struck for Portugal 1927-68. It superseded a silver type struck 1915-16 (KM 564) and in turn was replaced by a smaller bronze coin struck 1969-79. The escudo was retired in 1999 when Portugal joined the euro.
