This specimen was lot 4432 in Sincona sale 4 (Zurich, October 2011) where it sold for 1,300 CHF (about US$1,729 including buyer's fees). The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, <blockquote>"''DEUTSCHLAND Pfalz, Kurfürstentum Karl III. Philipp, 1716-1742. Dukat 1725, Heidelberg. Auf die Geburt des Prinzen Karl Philipp August, gewidmet von der Stadt Mannheim. Belorbeertes, geharnischtes, jugendliches Brustbild des Prinzen nach rechts. Rv. Stehender Prinz von vorn mit Granatapfel und Zweig. Sehr schön.'' (Electorate of Pfalz, Charles III Philip, 1716-42, ducat of 1725, Heidelberg mint. On the birth of the prince Charles Philip Augustus, dedicated by the city of Mannheim. Obverse: laureate, armored bust of the prince to right; reverse: prince stands with apple and branch. Very fine.)."</blockquote> Altho none of the ducats of Pfalz are common, this one is only scarce, not rare. The Rhineland was devastated during the Thirty Years War and Electoral Pfalz never recovered its former prosperity. After the fall of Napoleon, the region was incorporated into Prussia and was industrialized in the late nineteenth century.
