The ten soles denomination was first issued as a copper-nickel coin in 1969 (KM 253) and steadily shrank until its termination in 1984. The grim-faced visage shown here is that of Tupac Amaru, leader of an early rebellion against the Spanish, for which he was betrayed to the colonial authorities, tortured, executed and his corpse mutilated. The SCWC lists two varieties for 1978, the 'large letters&quot; reverse shown here (KM 272.2) and the &quot;small letters&quot; (shown here) which was used until 1983.
