This type, issued 1972-75 from Lima, reflects the accelerating pace of inflation which devastated [[Peru]] in the late 1970's and 1980's. The five soles denomination was first issued as a copper-nickel coin in 1969 (KM 253) and steadily shrank until its termination in 1984. The grim-faced visage shown here is that of Tupac Amaru, leader of an early rebellion against the Spanish, for which he was betrayed to the colonial authorities, tortured, executed and his corpse mutilated.&lt;br /&gt;
