The twenty centavos denomination was originally occupied by the silver [[Peru 1916-FG 1/5 sol|''quinto'']], struck 1888-1917. It was superseded by a copper-nickel coin in 1918, which was replaced by a brass type in 1942 when World War Two drove up the price of nickel. This sub-type, issued 1951-65, features a thinner planchet and a numeric date. All dates are available tho the 1954 is the scarcest date. It is accompanied by brass five and [[Peru 1953 10 centavos|ten centavos]].<br />
