The twenty centavos denomination was originally occupied by the silver [[Peru 1900-JF 1/5 sol|''quinto'']], struck 1888-1917. It was superseded by a copper-nickel coin in 1918, which was replaced by a brass type in 1942 when World War Two drove up the price of nickel. This sub-type, issued 1940-41, features a thick planchet and a spelled-out date. This date, a product of the Lima mint, is common. Similar [[Peru 1941 5 centavos|five]] and ten centavos exist.&lt;br /&gt;
