The ten centavos denomination was originally occupied by the silver [[Peru 1916-FG dinero|''dinero'']], struck 1863-1917. It was superseded by this copper-nickel coin in 1918, which was replaced by a brass type in 1942 when World War Two drove up the price of nickel. This sub-type, issued 1918-26, was replaced by a slightly different type issued 1935-41. It is accompanied by copper-nickel [[Peru 1919 5 centavos|five]] and [[Peru 1919 20 centavos|twenty centavos]].
