The first specimen is one of a series struck 1752-60 during the reign of Ferdinand VII (1746-59). Gilboy[1] notes the date as rare. There is only one reported variety, in which the mint anagram is dotted. As a class, pillar coinage of [[Peru]] is much less plentiful than that of Mexico, though it is more available than the remaining mints.

The second specimen was lot 1237 in Aureo y Calico sale 232 (Barcelona, March 2011), where it sold for 800 euros (about $1,320 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted, <blockquote>"''Fernando VI (1746-1759). 1758. Lima. JM. 2 reales. Columnario. Muy bella. Preciosa pátina. Rara y más así. S/C-.'' Mexican numismatists hotly debate which side of the coin constitutes the obverse. Gilboy[1] depicts the shield side as the obverse as that side bears the king's name. However, auction catalogs and dealer listings more frequently use the pillars and globes side as the obverse, as that side bears the date.
