This type was struck 1751-60 for king Ferdinand VI. It is one of only two years struck with the assayer initials JD. There are several varieties for the year, this example is the normal type. However, Gilboy[1] still considers it rare. As a class, pillar coinage of [[Peru]] is much less plentiful than that of Mexico, though it is more available than the remaining mints. One reales are quite scarce.

Mexican numismatists hotly debate which side of the coin constitutes the obverse. Gilboy[1] depicts the shield side as the obverse as that side bears the king's name. However, auction catalogs and dealer listings more frequently use the pillars and globes side as the obverse, as that side bears the date.
