This specimen was lot 656 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 35 (Winter Park, FL, May 2024), where it sold for $720. The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, "[[Peru|PERU]], Lima, cob 1 real, 1707 H. Choice full cross-lions-castles and pillars-and-waves with full assayer, one-and-a-half dates and mintmarks, deeply toned, minimal corrosion. With generic certificate from the salvor. Recovered from: HMS ''Assurance'', sunk in 1753 off Isle of Wight, south of England." Cob one reales were struck at the Lima mint 1701-46 for Philip V of Spain and became the "bits" of pirate lore. Specimens with legible dates bring triple those without. The fineness was lowered from 0.931 to 0.917 in 1725. The "minimal corrosion" mentioned in the auction description likely accounts for the light weight.
