This specimen was lot 1699 in Künker sale 403 (Osnabruck, March 2024), where it sold for €2,400 (about US$3,149 including buyer's fees). The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, <blockquote>"''PAPST PIUS IX., 1846-1878. Prägungen des Papstes Pius IX. Aus der Münzstätte Rom von seiner Rückkehr 1850 bis zur Münzreform vom 14. April 1858. 5 Scudi ANN IV/1850, R, Rom. 7,79 g Feingold. Stempelschneider Niccolò Cerbara. GOLD. R Attraktives Exemplar, vorzüglich-Stempelglanz.'' ([[Vatican|Papal States]], Pius IX, five scudi of the year 4, 1850, Rome mint. Rare, attractive example, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"</blockquote> The first coinage reform in the Papal States was implemented in the early 1830's during the reign of Gregory XVI (1831-46). All the doppie, zecchini, guili, testoni, etc., were dropped in favor of a silver [[Papal States 1850-R scudo Dav-194|scudo]] divided into one hundred baiocchi. Gold [[Papal States 1854-R scudo Fr-275|one]], [[Papal States 1854-R 2-1/2 scudi|2½]], five (shown here) and [[Papal States 1850-R 10 scudi|ten scudi]] were minted at Rome and [[Papal States 1846-B 5 scudi|Bologna]] until 1865. This type was struck at Rome and Bologna 1846-50 and 1854.
