This specimen was lot 3198 in Steve Album Auction 51 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2025), where it sold for $204. The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, "PAPAL STATES: Pius IX, 1846-1878, AR scudo, 1847-II-R, Rome Mint, spotty toned AU with somewhat prooflike surfaces." The early coinage of the Papal States used an antique monetary system. After 1830, five quattrini = one baiocco; 100 baiocchi = one scudo. This scudo was struck at the Rome mint 1846-48 (with Cerbara's signature) and 1850-54 (without).
