This specimen was lot 1677 in Künker sale 403 (Osnabruck, March 2024), where it sold for €1,900 (about US$2,493 including buyer's fees). The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, <blockquote>"''PAPST GREGOR XVI., 1831-1846. Prägungen des Papstes Gregor XVI. Nach der Münzreform vom 10. Januar 1835. Die Münzstätten Rom und Bologna. 5 Scudi A XII/1842 R, Rom. Feingold. Stempelschneider Niccolò Cerbara. GOLD. Fast Stempelglanz.'' ([[Vatican|Papal States]], Gregory XVI, 1831-46, five scudi of the year 12, Rome mint. About uncirculated.)"</blockquote> The first coinage reform in the Papal States was implemented in the early 1830's during the reign of Gregory XVI (1831-46). All the doppie, zecchini, guili, testoni, etc., were dropped in favor of a silver [[Papal States 1842-R scudo Dav-192|scudo]] divided into one hundred baiocchi. Gold [[Papal States 1854-R scudo Fr-275|one]], [[Papal States 1854-R 2-1/2 scudi|2½]], five (shown here) and [[Papal States 1842-R 10 scudi|ten scudi]] were minted at Rome and Bologna until 1865. This type was struck at Rome and Bologna 1835-46. This date is known with regnal year XII only.
