The type doesn't fit into the already chaotic papal coinage system nor does it match the doppie of her neighbors, such as Naples and Sardinia.
New page

This specimen was lot 724 in Sincona sale 54 (Zurich, May 2019), where it sold for 300 CHF (about US$357 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, <blockquote>"Kirchenstaat, Pius VI. 1775-1799. 1/2 Doppia 1784, Roma. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. (Papal States, Pius VI, 1775-99, half doppia of 1784, Rome mint. Very fine-extremely fine.)"</blockquote> This type was issued 1776-87 for Pius VI (1774-99). After striking zecchini fairly steadily 1738-84, the denomination was suddenly dropped in favor of a series of mezze doppie (Fr-247), doppie (Fr-246) and due doppie (Fr-245). The type doesn't fit into the already chaotic papal coinage system nor does it match the doppie of her neighbors, such as Naples and Sardinia. The series was also minted in Bologna (see Fr-385).

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 2.73 g, .917 fine gold, .080 troy oz AGW, this specimen 2.70 g.

Catalog reference: Fr-247; KM 1050, Ber-2956.
