This specimen was lot 1503 in Jean Elsen sale 136 (Brussels, March 2018), where it sold for €145 (about US$213 including buyer's fees). The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, <blockquote>"''FRANCE, ORANGE, Maurice de Nassau (1618-1625), AR demi-franc, 1620. D/ B. dr. et cuir. à d., avec une fraise. R/ Croix fleuronnée, ornée de quatre lis, une rosette en coeur. Cornet en début de légende. Rare Flan court. Double frappe. Très Beau.'' ([[France]], principality of Orange, Maurice of Nassau, 1618-25, silver half franc of 1620. Obverse: draped and armored bust to right with a strawberry flower; reverse: cross with four fleurs-de-lys, rosette at center, cornet at beginning of the legend. Rare, small planchet, double struck, very fine.)"</blockquote> This type is listed in 1619 and 1621 (1620 not listed). It was accompanied by an écu (Dav-3843). The princes of Orange were also counts of Nassau and later stadtholders of the Netherlands. As such they were allies of France in the struggle against Spain, but during the reign of Louis XIV, the Netherlands and France came into conflict. Louis XIV occupied Orange in 1672 and annexed it in 1713.
