This specimen is a copper eighth reales issued 1828-29 by the short-lived state of Occidente which was broken up in 1830 into the states of Sinaloa and Sonora. It is a scarce type.

The Mexican constitution reserved the right to coin gold and silver to the federal government but granted the right to mint copper to the states, which right they used and abused. For some states, this was a major source of revenue as the metal content was much less than the face value. For others, it was an opportunity to thumb their noses at the central government by proclaiming their "free and sovereign" status.

The second specimen was lot 44455 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2024), where it sold for $660. The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, "[[Mexico|MEXICO]]. Estado de Occidente. 1/8 Real, 1829. Alamos Mint. NGC AU-50. A RARE one-year type in general, this example especially so being the sole finest certified. Though it displays the crude strike expected of the issue, this piece lacks any of the corrosion or excessive wear usually encountered. The surfaces retain a great deal of originality and a lovely brown patina. From the EMO Collection. Ex: Virgil Brand & Norweb Collections."
