This specimen was lot 70222 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2023), where it sold for $1,380. The catalog description[1] noted, "[[Mexico|MEXICO]]. 1/4 Real, 1822-D. Durango Mint. Agustin I Iturbide. PCGS Genuine--Environmental Damage, Fine Details. Despite its noted issues, this example stands as a fairly SCARCE and difficult type, with still enough detail to make everything discernable." This specimen is one of a series of copper quarter reales issued 1821-23 by the state of Durango. It is among the less common "octavos" of the state.

The Mexican constitution reserved the right to coin gold and silver to the federal government but granted the right to mint copper to the states, which right they used and abused. For some states, this was a major source of revenue as the metal content was much less than the face value. For others, it was an opportunity to thumb their noses at the central government by proclaiming their "free and sovereign" status.
