This one year type is common in all grades. Nicaragua, never prosperous, suffered severely in the earthquake of 1972 and the subsequent incompetent and corrupt response by the Somoza regime. In 1979, the Somozas were overthrown by the [[Nicaragua 1980 50 centavos|Sandinistas]], an event which led to the notorious Iran-Contra affair. This coin, issued by the Sandinistas, was accompanied by [[Nicaragua 1987 5 centavos|five]], [[Nicaragua 1987 25 centavos|twenty-five]], [[Nicaragua 1987 10 centavos|ten centavos]], [[Nicaragua 1987 cordoba|one]] and [[Nicaragua 1987 5 cordobas|five cordobas]].<br />
