This specimen was lot 74229 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2023), where it sold for $960. The catalog description[1] noted, "[[Netherlands|NETHERLANDS]]. Gulden, 1944-P. Philadelphia Mint. Wilhelmina I. NGC MS-64. Variety with obverse legend below bust. A VERY ELUSIVE variety, and one that trades with comparable infrequency, this near-Gem example also adds tremendous beauty along with the variety. Strong luster dances in the light, and a touch of pretty toning highlights the surfaces. A pleasing and most impressive example that is certain to achieve many bids." The gulden was 10 g, .945 fine, until 1917. The later Wilhelmina type (KM 161.1) of 1922-40 was .720 fine. This subtype of 1944-45 was struck at the Philadelphia mint, the Utrecht mint being under Nazi occupation. When the homeland type was resumed in 1954, it was 6.5 g, .720 fine silver (KM 184).
