This specimen was lot 74332 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $780. The catalog description[1] noted, "NETHERLANDS. 2-1/2 Gulden, 1841. Utrecht Mint. William II. PCGS Genuine--Cleaning, EF Details. RARE date. Despite the noted cleaning, the present example displays good retained details, with a pleasing allure." This is a rare date of a type struck 1841-49. Despite the large overall mintage, this type is priced substantially higher than the succeeding type of William III ([[Netherlands 1852 2 1/2 gulden|KM 82]], struck 1849-74). It superseded the [[Netherlands 1824 3 gulden|three gulden]] of 1817-32. After the final issue of 1874, no 2½ gulden were issued until 1898. The .945 fine alloy seems to be unique to the Netherlands.
