This specimen was lot 74184 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2023), where it sold for $1,200. The catalog description[1] noted, "[[Netherlands|NETHERLANDS]]. [[Kingdom of Holland]] (Napoleonic). 50 Stuiver, 1808. Utrecht Mint. Louis Napoleon. NGC MS-64. A brilliant near-Gem example of this tremendous crown, this piece displays a shimmering and brilliant luster, with handsome details throughout. A bold and wholesome piece that is certain to generate much enthusiasm on the basis of its preservation and beauty." This type was struck 1807-08; the 1808 is scarce while the 1807 is rare. The portrait is of Louis Napoleon, Napoleon's brother, installed on the throne in hopes that his regime would enforce Napoleon's trade restrictions. Louis quickly came to side with the Dutch attitude towards smuggling and he was evicted in 1810 and the country annexed to France. A variety of coins were issued during his rule, ten and fifty stuivers, rijkdaalders, florins, guldens and ducats. When the kingdom of the Netherlands was reconstituted in 1815 under the prince of Orange, the coinage was reformed with the gulden as the base unit.
