This specimen was lot 74021 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2023), where it sold for $384. The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, "ITALY. [[Italy, Naples & Sicily|Naples & Sicily]] (Naples). Carlino, ND (1556-67)-IBR VP. Naples Mint. Filippo II (Philip II of Spain). PCGS AU-55. Quite handsomely struck and well made, the lightly handled minor yields solid brilliance and toning, with a strong portrait of the king more noted for his reign in Spain. From the David Sterling Collection." The carlino was ten grana and was introduced by Charles of Anjou in the thirteenth century. Carlo V, also king of Spain and emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, ruled Naples and Sicily until his abdication in 1556. The imperial crown went to the Austrian branch while the Spanish branch, in the person of Philip II, obtained the Hapsburg possessions in Italy, most importantly Milan and Naples.
