This specimen was lot 74015 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2023), where it sold for $336. The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, "ITALY. [[Italy, Naples & Sicily|Naples & Sicily]] (Naples). Coronato, ND (1458-94)-M. Naples Mint. Ferdinand I of Aragon. PCGS AU-50. An exceptionally attractive and alluring hammered issue featuring the enthroned monarch, this wholesome and lightly handled specimen is quite SCARCE and yields an enchanting tone upon each side. From the David Sterling Collection." Ferdinand I (called Ferrante) was the illegitimate son of the king of Aragon but managed to claim and hold the kingdom of Naples during his lifetime. His death in 1494 attracted the attention of the king of France, who invaded Italy to press his claim to the throne. The resulting war devastated all of Italy and resulted in Spanish control of Naples after 1504. It was the beginning of the end of the Renaissance.
