&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;''Ferdinand von Bayern stammte aus dem Geschlecht der Wittelsbacher. Sein Vater war Herzog Wilhelm V. von Bayern, sein Onkel der Kölner Erzbischof Ernst von Bayern. Ferdinand wurde früh für die geistliche Laufbahn ausersehen und erhielt eine Ausbildung durch die Jesuiten. Domkanonikate erwarb er in Mainz, Trier, Salzburg, Würzburg, Passau, Straßburg und in Köln. Nachfolgestellen bekam er schon als 14-Jähriger zugesprochen, nämlich in Berchtesgaden, wo er 1595 Fürstpropst wurde. Danach erfolgten Koadjutorenstellen in Köln, in Stablo-Malmedy, in Lüttich, in Hildesheim und Münster sowie in Paderborn. Diese Ansammlung von Pfründen widersprach den Konzilsakten von Trient, doch sah der Papst über diesen Fall zwecks Gegenreformation hinweg. In Köln übernahm Ferdinand die Regierungsgeschäfte von seinem Onkel Ernst von Bayern. Nach dessen Tod im Jahr 1612 konnte Ferdinand das Erzbischofsamt in Köln sowie die Bischofswürden in Münster, Lüttich und Hildesheim übernehmen, 1618 folgte das Bistum Paderborn. Durch den Anschluss an Bayern konnten diese Bistümer am ehesten in ihrem Bestand bewahrt werden. Ferdinand hat mit Hilfe der Reformorden die Erneuerung der katholischen Kirche vorangetrieben. Zeitgleich brach der Dreißigjährige Krieg aus, der große Belastungen mit sich brachte. Zunächst konnten mit dem Vorgehen der Katholischen Liga große Erfolge verbucht werden, bis Gustav Adolf von Schweden die protestantische Wende brachte. Ferdinand verfasste eine Hexenprozessordnung, welche die Folter erlaubte. In seiner Zeit fanden die Hexenprozesse im Kölner Erzbistum ihren Höhepunkt. Ferdinand starb 1650 in Arnsberg. Zuvor hatte er seinen Neffen Max Heinrich als Koadjutor in Köln, Hildesheim und Lüttich installiert. In Münster regierte an seiner Stelle dagegen ein Generalvikar.''
