[[Mozambique]] became a possession of the Portuguese after a series of agreements with local sultans along the southeast coast of Africa. The first trading post was established in 1505. It remained a Portuguese colony until 1975, when, after a protracted civil war, it was granted independence from [[Portugal]]. Coinage of colonial Mozambique was a mixture of countermarked foreign silver coins and regular coinage. This aluminum five meticais was issued 1980-82 and 1986.<br />
