This specimen was lot 3625 in Sincona sale 43 (Zurich, October 2017), where it sold for 11,000 CHF (about US$13,126 including buyer's fees). The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, <blockquote>"''MOROCCO, Königreich, Mohammed III. 1757-1790 10 Mithqual 1201 H. (1787). Madrid. Sehr selten. Vorzüglich. PCGS XF45.'' (kingdom of Morocco, Mohammed III, 1757-90, ten mitqal of AH 1201, Madrid mint. Very rare, Extremely fine.)"</blockquote> Prior to the coinage reform of 1889, Moroccan coins were either hammered or cast, and counterfeits abounded. What was lacking in local coins was made up for by the circulation of large quantities of foreign silver currency. This gold ten mitqals pattern was supposedly rejected because of the Ma mintmark. Gold dinars were struck at Fez and Marrakesh during this reign but are rare.
