This specimen was lot 4730 in Sincona sale 9 (Zurich, October 2012), where it sold for 70 CHF (about US$89 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, <blockquote>"''MEXIKO Republik. 8 Reales 1834, Guanajuato. PJ. 26,73 g. Gutes sehr schön.'' (Republic of Mexico, eight reales of 1834, Guanajuato mint, good very fine.)"</blockquote> This specimen was struck at the Guanajuato mint in 1835. This mint was opened by the republicans in 1812 and operated until 1900 and struck all denominations. During the 1830's and 1840's, Guanajuato and Zacatecas were the most prolific mints; Guanajuato issues are slightly more popular as they are readily available in nice condition. Zacatecas issues of this period were often wretchedly made. Assayer PJ is recorded for 1834-42. There is an unsubstantiated legend that the three dots after the date are a Masonic symbol.
