Shown is an 1787MoFM eight ''escudos'', one of a type struck in [[Mexico]] 1772-89 during the reign of Charles III. This type, though not cheap, is the first eight escudos type not stratospherically priced. The issues of 1772-85 were .901 fine gold. This coin was legal tender in the United States, where it was known as a doubloon, and would have traded for $15.50. This specimen was lot 25290 in Heritage sale 3026 (Long Beach, October 2013), where it sold for $1,938.75. The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, "Carlos III gold 8 Escudos 1788-FM, AU55 NGC, non-inverted Mo, nicely struck with considerable mint luster, a pleasing colonial 8 Escudos."
