The 1769MoM is one of a series of one reales struck 1760-1771, during the reign of Charles III. Gilboy<sup>[1]</sup> lists this date as "normal" with rare 1769/8 and 1769/70 overdates. The specimen shown is the 1769/70, which is a rather unusual case in which the overdate is for a year prior to that on the previously prepared die. It is considered to be extremely rare, with only a handful of pieces extant.

[[Mexico|Mexican]] numismatists hotly debate which side of the coin constitutes the obverse. Gilboy depicts the shield side as the obverse as that side bears the king's name. However, auction catalogs and dealer listings more frequently use the pillars and globes side as the obverse, as that side bears the date.
