This date is one of a series struck 1742-47 for Philip V. It is distinguished from earlier issues ([[Mexico 1741-Mo MF 1/2 real|KM 65]], 1732-41) of pillar half reales by having the crowned shield extend to the rim. 1742 is the first year of the new obverse design. Gilboy[1] lists the normal variety for this date as common. This particular specimen omits the pellet to the right of the date, which is an unlisted variety. The only listed occurrence of this alteration in design is for half reales of 1746.

[[Mexico|Mexican]] numismatists hotly debate which side of the coin constitutes the obverse. Gilboy[1] depicts the shield side as the obverse as that side bears the king's name. However, auction catalogs and dealer listings more frequently use the pillars and globes side as the obverse, as that side bears the date.
