This specimen was lot 8006 in Ponterio sale 159 (Baltimore, March 2011), where it sold for $31,625. The catalog description[1] noted, <blockquote>"[[Mexico|MEXICO]]. 4 Escudos, 1724-D. Extremely Rare and Possibly Unique Luis I 4 Escudos. Luis I (1724). King Philip V abdicated the throne to his eldest son Luis I on January 14, 1724. The reign of Luis I was tragic and regarded as the shortest reign of the Spanish kings. He ruled for a period of just over seven months before dying of small pox. Upon the death of his son, Philip re-assumed his role as King until his own death in 1746.
Minor coinage design changes occurred upon the ascension of Luis I. Most notably are the arms of the Low Countries located in the lower left quadrant of the bourbon shield. In 1724, the arms of the Low Countries changed from curved to straight bendlets as featured on the coin. The arms of Austria undergo minor changes in this year as well. From 1724 onward, the arms of Austria are represented with a solid horizontal bar in Fesse form.
Though Luis I only ruled in 1724, coins minted in Mexico dated both 1724 and 1725 are known struck in silver. Gold coins of Luis I minted in Mexico are extremely rare, only a handful of examples known. While extremely rare as a type, this coin is probably unique as a date. We are aware of a single example dated 1725 and no other dated 4 Escudos that fit the Reign of Luis I.
The top portion of the date runs off the planchet; however, the date is clearly 1724. Bold and full shield clearly showing every feature, clear assayer and mint mark. Small scratch in reverse field, lightly toned. Very attractive. BOLD VERY FINE+."</blockquote>
