This specimen was lot 73039 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2024), where it sold for $528. The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, "[[Mexico|MEXICO]]. Cob 8 Reales, (16)18-Mo D/F. Mexico City Mint. Philip III. PCGS Genuine--Scratch, VF Details. Though the collectors envelope and PCGS insert state that this piece is the overassayer due to doubling and lack of detail without intensive die comparison this is purely speculative. From the Sydney F. Martin Collection." The Mexico City mint, which began operation in the days of Cortez, did not begin dating its product until 1607. This type is known with various assayers for 1607-21 but the vast majority lack legible dates. Assayer D is listed for 1618-21.
