This specimen was lot 2681 in Goldberg sale 109 (Los Angeles, January 2019), where it sold for $492. The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, "[[Italy, Mantua|Italian States: Mantua]]. V (5) Soldi, VII (1799). Fasces with Liberty Cap. Siege issue. Toned. NGC graded MS-62." Originally an independent duchy during the Renaissance, Mantua was annexed by the Austrians in 1708, on the extinction of the Gonzagas, and held by them until 1797. At the Congress of Vienna, it once again fell under Austrian rule as part of the kingdom of Lombardy-Venetia. The city was besieged several times during Napoleon's Italian wars. This crude piece was issued by the French defenders along with [[Mantua Anno 7 soldo|one]] and [[Mantua Anno 7 10 soldi|ten soldi]]. Twenty soldi = one lira, twelve lira = one tallero. <br />
