This specimen was part of lot 4817 in Künker sale 386 (Osnabrück, March 2023), which sold for €260 (about US$336 including buyer's fees). The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, <blockquote>"''MAINZ, ERZBISTUM, Emerich Joseph von Breitbach-Bürresheim, 1763-1774. 1/6 Konv.-Taler 1774, Mainz, auf seinen Tod. 4,54 g und 4,36 g. 2 Stück., Schöne Patina, vorzüglich und sehr schön. Erworben von der Münzenhandlung Dr. Busso Peus, Frankfurt/Main.'' (archbishopric of [[German States, Mainz|Mainz]], Emerich Joseph von Breitbach-Bürresheim, 1763-74, one-sixth convention thalers of 1774, on his death. Two pieces, both nicely toned, extremely fine and very fine.)"</blockquote> The archbishops of Mainz were prolific issuers of gold coins in the late middle ages but output dropped in the late fifteenth century, never to recover. This issue was part of a series commemorating the death of archbishop Emerich Joseph in 1774. The auctioneers catalogued this as a quarter thaler but the weight marks this as a third thaler, which is how it is listed in the SCWC. It is scarce but not rare. No more coinage would be struck until the French revolution.
