This specimen was lot 4133 in Künker sale 335 (Osnabruck, Germany, March 2020), where it sold for €3,800 (about US$4,973 including buyer's fees). ''Nachdem der französische Generalleutnant Marquis de Bouffleurs 1688 in die Pfalz eingerückt war und sich vieler Städte, u. a. Kaiserslautern und Heilbronn bemächtigt hatte, sollte auch die Stadt Mainz dieses Schicksal erleiden, als der Oberbefehlshaber Marquis d'Uxelles mit seinen Kompanien anrückte. Die völlig unterlegene Stadt kapitulierte schon bald, stellte aber 12 Bedingungen, von denen die Franzosen jedoch nur die wenigsten einhielten. Unter Vertragsbruch rückten sofort 32 Kompanien in die wehrlose Stadt ein. Sie übersandten Ludwig XIV. auch gleich ein Schreiben mit der Anfrage, ob er die Stadt für immer behalten oder nur stark befestigen wolle. Nach vielen Überlegungen begann man nun von kaiserlicher Seite Maßnahmen zur Rückeroberung zu ergreifen. So rückte schließlich der Herzog von Lothringen am 6. Juli 1689 gegen Mainz vor, unterstützt von drei sächsischen Regimentern, zu denen schließlich noch der Kurfürst von Bayern hinzukam. Schon in der ersten Nacht wurde die Stadt bombardiert und in Brand gesetzt, was in den folgenden Monaten fortgesetzt wurde. Angriffe von französischer Seite wurden sofort mit Handgranaten unterbunden. Überläufer sagten aus, daß in der Stadt ein großes Sterben sei und der Gestank kaum auszuhalten. Am 9. September entschlossen sich die Franzosen zu kapitulieren und durften abrücken, wobei sie fast alle beweglichen Güter, insbesondere Kanonen, Gold und Silber mitnahmen. Der vorliegende 2/3 Taler ist zweifellos aus dem erbeuteten oder geraubten Silber der Bürger und Kirchen geprägt worden und diente zur Bezahlung der Besatzungstruppen.'' They immediately sent a letter to Louis XIV asking if he wanted to keep the city forever or only wanted to fortify it. After much deliberation, the imperials decided to retake the city. The Duke of Lorraine finally advanced against Mainz on July 6, 1689, supported by three Saxon regiments, to which the Elector of Bavaria finally joined. Defectors said that there was many deaths in the city and that the stench was unbearable.
