This specimen was lot 429 in Künker sale 263 (Osnabrück, June 2015), where it sold for €3,000 (about US$3,876 including buyer's fees). The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, <blockquote>"''Magdeburg, STADT Breiter Reichstaler 1673. Von großer Seltenheit. Hübsche Patina, winz. Schrötlingsfehler am Rand, sehr schön. Exemplar der Auktion Fritz Rudolf Künker 98, Osnabrück 2005, Nr. 3900.'' ([[Germany]], city of Magdeburg, wide thaler of 1673. Of the greatest rarity, nice toning, minor edge cracks, very fine. From Kunker sale 98, lot 3900.)"</blockquote> By the second half of the sixteenth century, the archbishopric of Magdeburg was completely converted to Lutheranism yet the ecclesiastical state was not abolished. Instead, it became a puppet state of the elector of Brandenburg, who either appointed himself or one of his close relatives archbishop. Brandenburg annexed it outright in 1680. This issue of 1673 is accompanied by a 1¼ ([[Magdeburg 1673-CP 1-1/4 thaler Dav-5525B|Dav-5525B]]) and double thalers (Dav-5525) struck from the same dies. The larger issues had the denomination punched in. The closely related [[Magdeburg 1673-CP thaler Dav-5527|Dav-5527]] had a slightly different obverse legend.
