Le Chapitre décida d'élire son grand doyen pour éviter de devoir choisir un candidat soutenu par la France ou par l'Empire. Mais en qualité de prince d'Empire, l'évêque de Liège se vit rapidement contraint d'adhérer à la Ligue d'Augsbourg formée par les puissances coalisées contre Louis XIV.
