This specimen was lot 1200 in Jean Elsen sale 156 (Brussels, September 2023), where it sold for €26,000 (about US$33,359 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, <blockquote>"''LIEGE, Principauté, Jean-Louis d'Elderen (1688-1694), AV double ducat, 1690, Liège. Le seul exemplaire connu. Très Beau à Superbe.'' ([[Austria, Austria-Netherlands|principality of Liège]], John Louis of Elderen, 1688-94, gold double ducat of 1690, Liège mint, large head variety. Obverse: bust right with skullcap; reverse: crowned and quartered arms of the principality with the escutcheon of Elderen. The only example known, Very Fine - Extremely Fine.)
(The first non-Bavarian prince-bishop in over a century, John Louis of Elderen was 68 years old at the time of his election, August 17, 1688. The chapter elected this grand old man to avoid having to choose between candidates supported by France and the Empire. In his capacity of prince of the Empire, the new bishop was constrained to join the League of Augsburg formed by the coalition against Louis XIV. In effect, the principality abandoned its neutrality to fight France's attempt to seize the Spanish Low Countries. The consequences were disastrous: Dinant was occupied, Huy was burned, the abbeys of Stavelot and Malmédy were pillaged and the town of Liège was bombarded with red hot shot by the troops of marshal de Boufflers in June 1691. John Louis decided to submit in February 1694. This double ducat is distinguished from the normal type by the larger head and the retrograde "N's" in the obverse legend. It was published in 2003 by E. Paquet.)"</p></blockquote> The bishopric of Liège was an ecclesiastical state in central Belgium. The surrounding territory was ruled by the Spanish Hapsburgs from about 1500 until 1699 and the Austrian Hapsburgs 1714-97. This type was struck 1666-83.
