It was declared the ''Etat du Gran Liban'' in 1920. During the war, Germany, through Vichy France, used Lebanon to move military equipment east into Iraq. To thwart this, the Free French recognized Lebanese independence and moved British and French troops into the area. This 2½ piastres was struck in Paris in 1940 as the Third Republic crumbled under Nazi attack. This specimen was lot 925 in Stephen Album sale 32 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2018), where it sold for $105.75.
