This specimen was lot 50441 in Ponterio sale 168 (Philadelphia, August 2012), where it sold for $270. The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, "[[Germany|GERMANY]]. Julich-Berg. Taler, 1774-PM. PCGS Genuine--Surface Tooled, EF Details Secure Holder. Karl Theodor. Area of tooling at rim, otherwise pleasing and original." Julich-Berg was a duchy on the lower Rhine which passed in the early seventeenth century to the Elector of the Palatinate (Pfalz-Neuberg). Karl Theodor eventually also became duke of Bavaria and united the three provinces but Julich-Berg was seized by Napoleon in 1801. After Napoleon's fall, the area passed to Prussia as part of the Rhineland and Bavaria was compensated with Bamburg, Wurzburg and other territories. This is the last thaler issued for Julich-Berg and is rare.
